Also referred to as the Borea Jezuchi Bajilika, this basilica is home to the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. Located in Old Goa, this church is also a part of Churches and Convents of Goa UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name, “Basilica of Bom Jesus†can roughly be translated to “Holy Jesusâ€. This church in Goa, the very first minor basilica of the country, is said to be one of the best and most studied examples of Baroque architecture of India. The construction of the Basilica started in the year 1594, and finished and consecrated in the year 1605 by the then Archbishop Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes. The remains of St. Xavier were shifted here two years after this death, and once a decade the remains are exhibited to the general public. It was last exhibited in 2014. The casket itself is made of silver, and is paraded out by pall bearers every 10 years. Needless to say, it is a must visit for people from all walks of life.

The Se Cathedral in Goa is also referred to as the Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina, and is an impressive looking white walled structure located in Old Goa. Although the cathedral is dedicated to the memory of St. Catherine, it is the seat of the Patriarch of the East Indies, as well as the cathedral of the Latin Rite Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. The legend behind the cathedral says that it was built for commemorating the Portuguese thwarting a Muslim Army, under the guidance of Afonso de Alburqueque.
